CEU’s are continuing education units. CEU’s are designed to do exactly as the phrase says give you ongoing education. So basically even after you become a CNA and pass your class and start working you will still be required to take mini classes to make sure you have the latest information so that you can provide the best care possible. The CEU classes are not that long and are not stressful at all. Most are 30 minutes- 1 hour long and can be in video or PDF format.

The continuing education units (CEU) give you updated information backed by research. So for instance if new research came out about handwashing and how to better protect yourself then they would push it out in the form of a CEU and then you would have to watch it.

Some CEU’s have mini quizzed associated with them to make sure you understand the information and others just give you a certificate once you have completed them with not quiz at all. Don’t stress the quizzes aren’t that hard, and you get to use notes if needed.

      Do you need CEU’s?

CEU’s are required by most states and they require you to have a certain amount within a certain time frame. So for Alabama you have to have 12 CEU’s a year. To see what your state requirements are visit your CNA board website.

Most of the time your facility has CEU’s available for you at no extra charge through a software on the computer, you’ll need to check and see. Some facilities have in-services and sometimes these can count as CEU’s so make sure you attend. Plus, most of the time they provide snacks and candy.

If you job does not provide CEU’s or maybe they do not provide the total amount you need you can also get some for free, yes FREE. Here is one of the many sites that provide CEU’s for free. A simple google search should bring up more options if this site doesn’t have what you need.

Whenever you complete your CEU’s make sure to get a copy of your completions certificate and keep up with it, just in case you get audited or need to turn in information to prove that you did your CEU. You can print out your certificates and have a folder or save them digitally on your phone or computer, you just need some proof to show that you completed them.
