Can I be a CNA if I have a record?
Did you know that you can get certified as a nurse aide if you have a record or background. No matter what it is you can get certified with a felony. When I say certified I mean that there are some schools who will train you to be a CNA even if you have a background. Even though, some schools will train you, this doesn’t mean that you will be able to find a job. I am not saying that it is impossible, but just know that you may not get hired, depending on what is found on your background.
Typically minor offenses like traffic tickets and some misdemeanors will not count against you, just always be honest on your job applications. Some facilities only search 7 years back so some things may not show up anyway.
If you have more serious offenses like sexual assault, abuse, battery, or something along those lines, they are likely not to hire you at all. The reason why is because as a CNA or any caregiver position you will be dealing with people and the facility sees those type of backgrounds as high risk factors for you causing harm to a client or your co worker. Again, i’m not saying it’s impossible , because you may can explain your situation.
Before taking a class or going through the school, I would do some research by calling around to local facilities and seeing the likelihood of them hiring someone with your background. While they can’t give a definite answer they can give you a general idea.
Be wise and do not waste your time and money taking a class if you won’t be able to utilize the certificate or degree. Do your due diligence and research and inquire first.
